Collinstown First Year Team On A Roll

The First Year boys played their second and final group game on Wednesday 11th December knowing that a win would mean topping the group.
The lads put in a great performance in their previous match against Marian College but knew they would face much tougher opposition in the defending champions Oatlands.

In cold windy conditions, the match started very slowly with both sides showing nerves. Alex O’Callaghan went close from a corner with his header grazing the top of the bar. It was as close as either side went during the first 15 minutes.

Then on the twenty-minute mark, Collinstown produced a moment of magic. There was excellent work down the left-hand side from Callum Kavanagh as he dribbled past a couple of players and chipped the ball into Derek Kavanagh who laid the ball off with a deft touch to midfielder Cian Burke for his first-time strike from 25 yards out into the top corner, what a beauty!

Oatlands dominated possession in the first half but failed to test goalkeeper Charles O’Reilly. They could not get past Collinstown’s captain Sean Cummins who was a rock at the back all game, confidently dispossessing the opposition and clearing any danger that came his way.

Collinstown had a great chance to double their lead just before the break when Derek Kavanagh found himself with space in the box but the Oatlands keeper produced a magnificent save to keep it 1-0 going into the break.

Collinstown were playing into the wind in the second half, but they relished the challenge and seemed to grow in confidence. They were creating a lot more chances and still defending with a lot of confidence. Then midway through the second half, midfielder Gareth Glennon slipped Kavanagh in behind who was taken down by the keeper for a penalty. He stepped up confidently and buried it past the keeper into the roof of the net.

O’Reilly produced a world-class save late on when he tipped the ball past the post for what looked like a certain goal and preserve his clean sheet.

Collinstown closed the game out to make it two wins from two with 11 goals scored and none conceded to top the group. They will have a home semi-final draw after Christmas.

Best of luck to the boys!
